About This Project
Independent, transparent wage garnishment tools built directly from official federal and state statutes.
Who Built This Site
Wage Garnishment Calculator was built and is maintained by Nikhil Sadavarthi, an independent software developer.
When examining wage garnishment online, it quickly became apparent that workers facing garnishment confront two major problems: most online calculators are aggressive lead-generation funnels designed to collect personal phone numbers, or they use outdated flat percentages that fail to apply state-specific minimum wage floors.
This project was created to solve that problem: a clean, math-accurate calculation tool that runs instantly in your browser, requires zero sign-up or personal data, and clearly cites the exact statute governing your paycheck.
Our Legal Research Methodology
Wage garnishment law in the United States is a two-tiered system. Every calculation on this website is programmed from primary government sources:
1. Federal Baseline (CCPA Title III)
Under 15 U.S.C. § 1673, the federal government establishes the national floor protecting ordinary worker paychecks (the lesser of 25% of disposable pay or the amount exceeding 30 times the federal minimum wage).
2. State Statutory Codes
Under 15 U.S.C. § 1677, states have the legal authority to enact more protective rules. We review state civil practice codes, labor statutes, and legislative updates directly—such as California CCP § 706.050 (SB 1477), New York CPLR § 5231, Illinois 735 ILCS 5/12-803, and constitutional bans in Texas, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
3. Special Debt Authorities
For non-consumer debts, we reference federal statutory frameworks, including Title 20 of the U.S. Code for student loans and Internal Revenue Code § 6334 with IRS Publication 1494 tables for tax levies.
Correction Policy & Updates
Statutes, minimum wages, and court rules change periodically. We review and update state parameters each year.
If you are a payroll professional, legal aid attorney, or worker who notices a recent statutory amendment or local rate change that is not yet reflected on our pages, please let us know. We verify every reported correction against official legislative records and update our data promptly.
